Death of Labour MP Ashok Kumar

Dr Ashok Kumar, Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has died suddenly at the age of 53. Dr Kumar entered Parliament in 1991 as MP for Langbaurgh. He had served as MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland since 1997.

Speaker John Bercow paid tribute to Mr Ashok at the start of Commons business today Monday 15 March.

Dr Kumar, who was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn, was also Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Chemical Industry.
