Following Liverpool’s year as the European Capital of Culture, Members of the House of Lords debated the role of culture as a front-line service in the UK on 18 March.

Issues discussed included music, painting, museums, other European cities of culture, the growth in creative industry enterprises, and lessons to be learned, particularly in connection with the planned UK Cultural Olympiad in 2012.

In the House of Lords Members may table questions for debate, usually up to two hours and a half, on a specific issue or matter of concern.
