Crown Dependencies

The Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey are self-governing dependencies of the UK. The UK Government is constitutionally responsible for the international representation of these 'Crown Dependencies'. The Ministry of Justice is the UK Department with policy responsibility for managing the UK's relationship with the Crown Dependencies.

Recent events, for example, the impact of the banking crisis on the Crown Dependencies, have brought the Ministry of Justice's role in relation to the Crown Dependencies into focus. The Justice Committee is conducting a brief inquiry into the role and performance of the Ministry of Justice in relation to the Crown Dependencies.

Justice Issues in Europe

One of the major tasks of the Swedish EU Presidency (which began July 2009) was to develop a new five-year programme for justice and home affairs - the 'Stockholm programme'. The Committee inquiry has been examining how action taken at a European level on justice issues has affected people and the key areas in which European cooperation on justice issues could or would not add value to the experiences and rights of the individual.
