The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy hears evidence at 10.35am from the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as part of its inquiry into piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU’s Operation Atalanta.

Baroness Kinnock will be accompanied by Chris Holtby, Deputy Head of Security Policy Group, and the Committee will also hear from Commander Bob Anstey.

The Committee will ask about the EU’s strategy to address the root causes piracy in the Gulf of Aden and the Somali basin, and more specifically about the role that the UK is playing as part of a wider international effort. The organisation and logistics of piracy networks, which are increasingly sophisticated, and the financial aspect of piracy will also be discussed.

Further topics will include any shortfalls in the military capabilities of Operation Atalanta and the balance of prioritising between the deterrence of piracy and the prosecution of pirates.
