Lords debates Queen’s Speech

The House of Lords continued to debate the topics raised by the Government’s programme of legislation and policies announced in the Queen’s Speech on 26 May.

Different subject areas are debated on each day following State Opening and the Queen’s Speech. The Lords debate normally lasts four to five days after the day of the ceremony.

Forty-nine Members of the Lords made contributions in the fifth and final day of debate. The topics covered in the debate were education, health, welfare and culture.

Wed 3 Jun: Business and Economic Affairs, Environment, Energy, Agriculture and Transport

Thu 27 May: Home, Legal and Constitutional Affairs and Local Government

Wed 26 May: Foreign and European Affairs, International Development and Defence

Tue 25 May: Queen's Speech

Members of the Lords with wide-ranging experience and expertise in the subjects examine the Government's proposed policies and legislation outlined in the Queen's Speech and give their responses.

Parliamentary programme

The programme of work to turn what is outlined in the Queen's Speech into legislation begins as Bills are introduced in both Houses.

The role of the House of Lords in examining and passing legislation and keeping a check on Government by scrutinising its activities is integral to the work of Parliament.
