New Members of Parliament have started arriving at the House of Commons as a new government is formed with a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition - the first coalition for 70 years.

They will be able to go through a basic administrative process to enable them to begin work straight away.

They gathered in Westminster Hall for a group photo earlier today which is available for download on Parliament's Flickr photostream.

A series of briefings will also be offered over the next few weeks by their parties and the House of Commons service to help new Members prepare for life at Westminster.

They will receive also a new members’ handbook with basic guidance.

The House of Commons will formally return on 18 May 2010. The first business will be the re-election of the Speaker.

Speaker's election

This will be followed by the swearing in of new members. At a later date the House will also be electing the three Deputy Speakers for the first time.
