MPs agree allocation of chairs of select committees

The House of Commons has agreed a motion to allocate the proportions of chairs of select committees falling to each party. The breakdown was agreed as in the Order of Business for May 26 2010.

This begins the process for the election of chairs for select committees laid down by Standing Order 122B. Nominations for the posts will close on Tuesday 8 June and any contested elections will take place on Wednesday 9 June.

The Standing Order provides for the chairs of the following select committees to be elected by the House:

Select committees appointed under Standing Order No. 152: 

  • Business, Innovation and Skills
  • Children, Schools and Families (Education)
  • Communities and Local Government
  • Culture, Media and Sport
  • Defence
  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
  • Foreign Affairs
  • Health
  • Home Affairs
  • International Development
  • Justice
  • Northern Ireland Affairs
  • Science and Technology
  • Scottish Affairs
  • Transport
  • Treasury
  • Welsh Affairs, and
  • Work and Pensions.

Other specified select committees:

  • the Environmental Audit Committee
  • the Select Committee on Public Administration
  • the Committee of Public Accounts
  • the Select Committee on Procedure

The names of Members nominated for election as Select Committee Chairs have been published for the following committees:

  • Defence Committee
  • Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee
  • Home Affairs Committee
  • Northern Ireland Affairs Committee
  • Science and Technology Committee

  • the Select Committee on Public Administration
