On Tuesday 8 June Members of the House of Lords held a short debate on the Government's plans to maintain competitiveness in the UK economy

Taxation, and corporate tax in particular, played a major part in the debate.  Members also discussed other economic issues including the financial services industry, regulation, enterprise, education and public sector management.

The debate was introduced by Lord Levene of Portsoken, and concluded with a response from the Government given by Lord Sassoon, as the Commercial Secretary to the Treasury.
Lord Sassoon's response doubled as his maiden speech in the House of Lords.

Questions for short debate can be tabled by any Member, and usually last 60 to 90 minutes.
