MPs to elect Deputy Speakers using new system

On Tuesday 8 June, MPs will elect three Deputy Speakers using a secret ballot system, the first time this procedure has been used.
In 2009 the Speaker proposed that the Deputy Speakers be elected. The proposal was considered by the Procedure Committee and agreed in March 2010.
The ballot will use the Single Transferable Vote system. The Speaker will announce the results of the ballot to the House.
The new rules require that at least one man and at least one woman must be elected across all four posts of Speaker and Deputy Speakers.
The Deputy Speakers will be elected for a Parliament - up to five years - with terms of office running independently to the Speaker.
