Local Government Bill committee stage

The Local Government Bill completed its committee stage, line by line examination of the Bill, in the House of Lords on Wednesday 14 July.
Baroness Hanham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, introduced the debate.

Members discussed three amendments to clause 1: Prevention of implementation of certain proposals for single tier of local government; clause 2: Consequential electoral provision; and one amendment to clause 3: Extent, commencement and short title; and an amendment to the title of the Bill.
The report stage of the Bill, which provides a further opportunity to amend the Bill, takes place on Wednesday 28 July.

Committee stage involves the detailed line by line examination of the separate parts (clauses and schedules) of the Bill. Any Member of the Lords can take part.
Committee stage can last for one or two days to eight or more. It usually starts no fewer than two weeks after the second reading.
