The House of Lords approved proposals for a new system of financial support for Members on 20 July.

Lord Strathclyde, the Leader of the House of Lords, moved the motions on Members’ allowances and travel expenses. Members also approved the House Committee report ,‘Financial Support for Members of the House of Lords’, which sets out the new arrangements in detail.

Members can elect to receive a daily allowance for attendance at a sitting of the House or a committee, under the simplified system which will come into effect on 1 October 2010. Members can elect to receive £300 or £150 per day they attend the Lords.
