Statement on stop and search powers
9 July 2010
Home Secretary, Theresa May, made a statement to the House of Commons on 8 July on the Terrorism Act 2000 (Section 44) and new interim guidelines for the police. Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 grants the use of stop and search powers. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in its judgment on 30 June 2010 that the stop and search powers under section 44 amount to the violation of the right to a private life.
