Lord Speaker in Bristol

In a day of outreach activities in Bristol on Wednesday 15 September the Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman met advice centre staff and volunteers, students and black and minority ethnic social entrepreneurs.
This is the latest event for the House of Lords outreach programme that aims to raise awareness in local communities of the role of the House of Lords and how they can influence its work. The first ever Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman takes a special interest in the outreach aspects of her role, keen that people around the country are aware of how the House of Lords works for them.
The programme of activities provided an opportunity for the Lord Speaker to meet people from a range of local communities, hear about issues important to them and help them understand how they can interact with Members of the House of Lords to get their issues raised in Parliament.
Baroness Hayman received a tour of Bristol Citizens Advice Bureau and their new drop-in centre, Bristol Advice Point, meeting staff to hear about their work in the morning.
In the afternoon Baroness Hayman discussed the role and wide-ranging work of the House of Lords with students in the library of St Mary Redcliffe & Temple School.
Later in the day, Baroness Hayman took part in a discussion session explaining how people can engage with the House of Lords to help influence public policy, as part of a workshop-style seminar with representatives from Bristol’s black and minority ethnic community at the Black Development Agency.
