Lords debate on digital switchover

The House of Lords debated the findings of the report by the Communications Committee on the digital switchover of television and radio in the UK on Tuesday 12 October.

The report, published in March 2010, found the public confused and industry uncertain about radio digital switchover. Lack of information means people are continuing to buy analogue radios that cannot be used after 2015 and car manufacturers are still fitting them in cars.
The Committee argues that government has to make the case for switchover and inform the public about its impact or risk ‘major reaction’ against it.
The debate was opened by Lord Fowler who chaired the inquiry into the digital switchover. Lord Maxton spoke for the Opposition and Baroness Bonham-Carter spoke on behalf of the Government.
