Members of the House of Lords discussed the importance attached by the Government to the teaching of modern languages in schools and universities in a debate on 28 October

Baroness Coussins (Crossbench), chair of the All Party Group on Modern Languages, opened the debate. Other Members participating in the debate:

  • Baroness Benjamin (Liberal Democrat), governor of Dulwich College and chancellor of Exeter University
  • Baroness Sherlock (Labour), former chief executive of the Refugee Council who was a special adviser to Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor
  • Lord Hannay of Chiswick (Crossbench), former diplomat and chair of the United Nations Association UK
  • Lord Jay of Ewelme (Crossbench), former head of the Diplomatic Service
  • Baroness Sharp of Guildford (Liberal Democrat), school governor and former education spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats
  • Baroness Warnock (Crossbench), a philosopher specialising in education and morality

Baroness Hooper, Lord Harrison, Lord Broers, Baroness Butler-Sloss, Lord Cobbold, Baroness Crawley and Lord Lyell also spoke in the debate. Baroness Garden of Frognal spoke on behalf of the Government.
