Deputy Speaker to open Bill workshop in Birmingham

The event will be held on Friday 29 October 2010 and will be introduced by Nigel Evans, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.

The workshop is being run as part of Parliament’s efforts to encourage engagement with legislative scrutiny and will focus on the different ways to track and influence the progress of a Bill.

Each of the Public Bill workshops organised by Parliamentary Outreach is based around a different subject area. Previous workshops have looked at Public Bills in the context of education and of energy and the green economy issues. The October workshop will be the only one on the subject of localism and decentralisation. The next workshop, planned for November, will look at welfare reform.

What the Public Bill workshop will look at

The workshop will include information on:

• submitting evidence to a Public Bill Committee in the Commons
• engaging with members of the Lords as they consider a Bill
• accessing independent House of Commons Library research
• tracking the progress of a Bill online
• understanding secondary legislation

Experts from the Houses of Parliament will be on hand to answer any questions on the parliamentary scrutiny of a Bill.

Where and when

The event will take place in the Birmingham and Midland Institute and runs from 1.30pm and 4pm, with registration from 1pm.

Availability

The workshop is free to attend and open to any individual or organisation with an interest in localism and decentralisation. There are still some places available if you are interested in attending.
