Strategic Defence and Security Review statement read in the Lords

Lord Strathclyde, Leader of the House of Lords repeated the Government statement on the Strategic Defence and Security Review on Tuesday 19 October.
The statement, emphasised that review was composed of four key components, which included: the relationship between national security and economic strength; the way in which the UK projects power and influence in a rapidly changing world; clarification that there will be no cut in financial support to the Armed Forces in Afghanistan; and a combined look at all elements of security, both home and abroad.

Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, responded on behalf of the Opposition. Lord Lee of Trafford, Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, Lord Boyce, Lord Touhig, the Lord Bishop of Blackburn, Lord Reid of Cardowan, Lord King of Bridgewater, Lord West of Spithead and Lord Foulkes of Cumnock also commented in the time available to respond.
Issues raised following the statement included:
- The impact of spending cuts on the defence and security of the country
- Possible cuts to the number of helicopters
- Preparing Armed Forces for future challenges
- The future of the UK's nuclear deterrent
- The role of the Reserve Forces
Earlier this week, the government published its National Security Strategy, covering issues including cyber security, national disasters and pandemics.
