Lords responds to Aviation Security Statement

Baroness Neville-Jones, Minister of State for Security and Counter-Terrorism, repeated the government statement on Terrorism: Aviation Security in the House of Lords on 2 November 2010.

At the end of a statement Members of the Lords can respond or question the government minister on its contents.

Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, Opposition spokeperson for the Home Office, responded on behalf of the Opposition.

Issues raised following the statement included:

  • The implications of this week's events for airline security
  • Reliabiltity of current airport security checks
  • The impact of budgetary cuts on the UK Border Agency
  • Security on incoming flights to the UK

The government uses statements to make announcements about matters of policy, government actions, and national or international emergencies. Statements are usually read out by a minister but can also be made in writing. A statement can be made in either or both Houses.

Members can respond or question the minister for a limited period following a statement.
