Lords debates Common Agricultural Policy

Members of the House of Lords discussed potential reforms to European Union agricultural subsidies in a debate on Thursday 18 November

The debate took place on the same day as EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Cioliş, which was expected to present the Communication - the CAP towards 2020 - at a meeting of Copa-Cogeca, a group that represents EU farmers and their cooperatives.

Lord Greaves (Liberal Democrat) opened the debate. Other Members who spoke included:

  • Baroness Quin (Labour), former Minister of State and Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and former MEP
  • Lord German (Liberal Democrat), former Minister for Rural Development and Wales Abroad
  • Lord Dykes (Liberal Democrat),  former Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
  • Lord Plumb (Conservative), former president of the National Farmers Union and former president of the Royal Agricultural Society of England
  • Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer (Liberal Democrat), vice-chair of the all-party group on Local Environment Quality

Lord Wills also took part in the debate. Lord Henley responded on behalf of the government.
