Statement on UN Climate Change Conference

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, made a statement to the House of Commons on Monday 13 December on the outcome of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun.

Cancun climate change conference
The United Nations Climate Change Conference took place in Cancun, Mexico, from 29 November to 10 December 2010 to discuss the future of the Kyoto Protocol.
Over a decade ago, a number of countries joined an international treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to consider what can be done to reduce global warming.
More recently, a number of nations approved an addition to the treaty, the Kyoto Protocol, which has more powerful (and legally binding) measures. There are currently 194 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and 193 Parties to its Kyoto Protocol.
