Early day motions, commonly called EDMs, are formal motions submitted by individual MPs.

EDMs can be on a variety of subjects and generally they reflect MP's personal concerns, campaigns and political interests.

Very few EDMs actually end up being debated, but they can serve to 'get the ball rolling' and unite MPs who might share a common concern or point of view.

Online EDMs

Early Day Motions can also help garner public interest on issues and frequently receive media coverage.

EDMs have traditionally been printed and published as part of the daily bundle of parliamentary papers.

However, the online database offers the ability to search through thousands of new and archived EDMs, and filter searches by subject, by date, by EDM number or by MP.
