Government proposals to devolve greater powers to local councils have been considered on several occasions in Parliament recently

Localism Bill

The Government's Localism Bill was introduced into the House of Commons on 13 December 2010. The Bill proposes to devolve greater powers to councils and neighbourhoods and give local communities more control over housing and planning decisions.

The Bill had its second reading on 17 January and was then considered by a Public Bill Committee. The Bill will be considered at report stage in the House of Commons, date to be announced.

House of Commons Library Analysis
