Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Henry Bellingham, responded to an urgent question asked by Ian Liddell-Grainger, Conservative MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset, on British nationals in Eritrea.

Situation in Eritrea

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs outlined the steps being taken to gain consular access to, and secure the release of, the British nationals taken prisoner by the Eritrean authorities in December 2010.

Watch and read the urgent question and the views expressed by MPs on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard. Find current parliamentary material on Africa in the Topics section on the Parliament website.

Urgent questions

Urgent questions are asked at the end of Question Time. If something has happened, normally a matter of public importance, which an MP believes requires an immediate answer from a government minister, they may apply to the Speaker to ask an urgent question.

If the Speaker agrees, the question will be asked at the end of Question Time.
