Lord Speaker visits charity champions in Manchester

The Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, met representatives from voluntary and community sector organisations in Manchester on Friday 2 December.
She joined members of the Manchester Alliance for Community Care (MACC) for lunch before talking to them about the role of the Lord Speaker, the functions of the House and helping them to explore how they and their organisations can get involved in House of Lords work. Baroness D’Souza took tookr questions in the Q&A session that followed.
Speaking ahead of her visit, the Lord Speaker said:
“The decisions that are made by Parliamentarians in both Houses affect everyone in the UK at every stage of their life. It is vitally important that people understand both the work of the House of Lords and how they can engage with us and be involved with what we do. I am so pleased to be visiting Manchester for my first regional visit as Lord Speaker, and I hope that everyone who comes along will benefit from the event, so that their organisations can engage more strategically with Parliament, and the House of Lords in particular.”

Baroness D’Souza is the second elected Lord Speaker. Her role involves overseeing business in the House of Lords Chamber and acting as an ambassador for the House of Lords.
The MACC is a campaigning organisation which provides free support for local voluntary and community sector organisations. They in turn work to create and support services which improve the health and quality of life of the local community and its residents.
