The Rt Hon Baroness Hayman, the Lord Speaker, was in Wolverhampton on Thursday 17 February visiting Wolverhampton High School for Girls, the Compton Hospice and the Civic Centre to talk to people about working life in Westminster
The Lord Speaker, who attended Wolverhampton High School for Girls herself, spoke to students about the work of the House of Lords, how laws are made and how the Lords holds the Government to account. The students then had the opportunity to question Baroness Hayman on all aspects of Parliament.
The Lord Speaker also visited the Compton Hospice and met participants from the Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council’s Black Country Take Part project at the Civic Centre.
The visit is part of the House of Lords’ outreach programme that operates in all regions of the UK to reach out to the public to engage them with what the House of Lords does and how it works for them. The Lord Speaker is the ambassador for the scheme, which aims to raise awareness of the role of the House of Lords and to encourage young people in particular to get involved in politics.
Commenting on her visit, Baroness Hayman said:
‘I am delighted to be back in Wolverhampton to visit my old school and talk to students about the very important work we do in Parliament. I look forward to hearing about the Take Part initiative from the VSC and talking with participants about their projects and their contribution to the Wolverhampton community. Hopefully the visits will help to bring the work of Parliament at Westminster to life.’
