Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, made a statement to the House of Commons on Wednesday 13 July to announce the publication of the Mull of Kintyre review.

Mull of Kintyre review

The Ministry of Defence published the conclusions of an independent review into the Chinook Mk2 helicopter crash of June 1994 on the Mull of Kintyre which tragically resulted in the deaths of all 29 people on board.

The review was led by Lord Philip and made three recommendations.

  • the finding that the pilots were negligent to a gross degree should be set aside
  • the MOD should consider offering an apology to the families of the pilots
  • the MOD should reconsider its policy and procedures for the transport of personnel whose responsibilities are vital to national security.

The review report can be found on the Ministry of Defence website.

Watch and read the statement and the views expressed by MPs on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard. Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, Jim Murphy, responded to the statement on behalf of the Opposition.

Oral statements

Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday). Statements usually relate to matters of policy or government actions.

At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
