The Education Bill had its second reading – a general debate on all aspects of the Bill – in the House of Lords Tuesday 14 June.

Members with backgrounds in teaching, higher education and working with young people, took part. Some of the issues they discussed covered:

  • Free early years provision for disadvantaged two year olds, and whether or not it was extensive enough;
  • Anonymity for teachers, and other people working with children, while allegations against them are being investigated;
  • The effectiveness of powers relating to discipline and searches, and their impact on the rights of children.

Lord Edmiston, Conservative life Peer, made his maiden speech during the debate.
