Election of the Speaker of the House of Lords

A list of the six candidates standing for election as Speaker of the House of Lords was published today (Monday 27 June)

The list was sent to all Members of the House of Lords, together with a statement of each candidate’s parliamentary service, their entry in the Register of Lords’ Interests and their election addresses.
A hustings event for candidates has been organised by the Hansard Society. The event, open for Members of the House of Lords to attend, takes place on Tuesday 28 June.
Voting for the election of the Speaker of the House of Lords will take place on Wednesday 13 July. All Members of the House who have taken the Oath who are not subject to statutory disqualification, suspended from the service of the House, or on leave of absence are eligible to vote.
The result will be announced on Monday 18 July. The new Lord Speaker will formally take office on Thursday 1 September.

The Speaker of the House of Lords – the Lord Speaker – chairs daily business in the Chamber and is an ambassador for the work of the House.
The current Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman, announced her intention not to seek re-election on 9 May 2011. Baroness Hayman was elected as the first Lord Speaker in July 2006.
