Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond, made a statement to the House of Commons on Tuesday 1 March on the subject of Intercity Express and rail electrification.

The have announced plans for the extension of the electrification of the Great Western main line and the procurement of a replacement for the existing diesel inter-city trains.
