Speaker celebrates music education

On 9 November 2011, the Speaker, Rt Hon. John Bercow MP, showed his support for the New London Orchestra's performing and education programmes for young people by hosting them at Speaker’s House.
During the evening, guests heard a performance of Michael Hurd's jazz cantata, 'Jonah-Man Jazz', given by the choir of St Francis' Catholic Primary School, Newham, and members of the orchestra conducted by Ronald Corp.
The event was to mark the orchestra's work in east London, notably its 2-year performance residency at Stratford Circus arts centre, and the orchestra’s flagship education project, 'Literacy through Music', which is taking place in 65 Newham primary schools until June 2013.
Commenting on the orchestra's work, The Speaker said:
"the NLO is playing an important role in Newham, and we are grateful for all it is doing"
Adding to his comments, the Rt Hon. Stephen Timms MP, the member of Parliament for East Ham said:
"We have a great deal happening in the area and the New London Orchestra has played a very important part in celebrating the changes that are under way, in helping to make them very memorable, particularly for young people in the borough."
