The House of Lords officially launches its own Twitter channel today (Thursday 29 September). @UKHouseofLords, which is produced by Lords staff, shows how the House of Lords challenges and keeps a check on the UK Government

The Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, together with David Beamish, Clerk of the Parliaments posted the first official tweet on 5 September when the House of Lords started tweeting directly through its own Twitter feed. Information about Lords business has previously been tweeted by @UKParliament.

Calling on the public to use @UKHouseofLords to join in the debate on issues the House of Lords works on, the Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, said:

“I hope you will join us @UKHouseofLords and let us know what you think. My hope is that over time @UKHouseofLords will become a really valuable way for us to speak with you, the public on whose behalf we work, directly. The House of Lords is a vital part of the UK’s democracy and what we do is all about tackling issues and holding the Government to account on subjects which matter to us all.

“We have a reputation for leading the way in opening our work to the public, from being the first second chamber to be televised back in 1985 to becoming the first and only upper chamber in the world to have a cross-party blog.

“That is why I want @UKHouseofLords to offer an extra way of working with us, enthusing and engaging more people than ever before in the vital work the Lords does.”
