Lords debates contribution of UK's Ugandan Asian community

Members of the Lords will debate the contribution made by the Ugandan Asian community in the UK today (Thursday 6 December). The debate marks the 40th anniversary of the expulsion of Uganda's Asian population.

The debate was tabled by Lord Popat (Conservative), who arrived in the UK from Uganda as a 17-year-old in 1971, a year before the expulsion order. Speakers expected to contribute include:

  • Lord Singh of Wimbledon (Crossbench), a prominent British Sikh and former adviser to the Commission of Racial Equality
  • Lord Bach (Labour), former government spokesperson for Foreign and Commonwealth Office
  • Lord Bilimoria (Crossbench), president, UK-India Business Council
  • Lord Dykes (Liberal Democrat), former party spokesperson for foreign and commonwealth affairs.
