The Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, has been named as Politician of the Year by the Political Studies Association (PSA).

The PSA is the leading organisation in the UK linking academics in political science and current affairs, theorists and practitioners, policy-makers, journalists, researchers and students in higher education.

Reacting to the Award the Speaker said:

"I am honoured and touched to receive this award from the PSA, an organisation I hugely respect. More than 25 years ago at Essex University I benefited enormously from academic teaching by, amongst others, Tony King and David Sanders and I continue to believe that the value of the exposition and the contest of ideas to the wider world of politics and society at large cannot be overstated.  In accepting this award I want to salute my colleagues in all parties for the dynamism, rigour and forensic skill with which they deploy the instruments of scrutiny available to them in the House of Commons".
