MPs debate Olympic and Paralympic funding

John Whittingdale, Conservative MP for Maldon and Chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, moved a debate in the House of Commons on Monday 27 February on funding for the Olympics and Paralympics.
Estimates debate
The debate on the funding of the Olympic and Paralympic games follows the publication of the estimates for the allocation of expenditure for Central government, including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, for the year ending 31 March 2013.

The Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson, responded during the debate on behalf of the Government. The Shadow Minister for the Olympics, Tessa Jowell, responded during the debate on behalf of the Opposition.

Estimate days
All public spending has to be approved by Parliament. Estimates of spending are presented to parliament and three 'estimates days' are set aside each year to debate the content of those estimates presented. In practice, estimates days are often used for debating one or more estimates or select committee reports chosen by the Liaison Committee.
