Louise Ellman, Labour/Co-operative MP for Liverpool, Riverside and Chair of the Transport Select Committee, moved a debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 28 February on transport and the economy.

Estimates debate

The debate on the funding of the Department for Transport follows the publication of the estimates for the allocation of expenditure for Central government, including the Department for Transport, for the year ending 31 March 2013.

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Norman Baker, responded during the debate on behalf of the Government. Shadow Minister for Transport, Lilian Greenwood, responded during the debate on behalf of the Opposition.

Watch and read the debate on Parliament TV and in Commons Hansard. Also find more parliamentary material on transport in the Topics and News sections on the Parliament website.

Transport and the economy

The Transport Select Committee held an inquiry into transport and the economy and published its report on 2 March 2011. The Government Response to the Committee report was published on 6 May 2011. As part of the ongoing scrutiny of the Department for Transport, the Committee has also published a report into the financial scrutiny of the Department. Further information can be found on the Tranpsort Committee webpages.

Estimate days

All public spending has to be approved by Parliament. Estimates of spending are presented to parliament and three 'estimates days' are set aside each year to debate the content of those estimates presented. In practice, estimates days are often used for debating one or more estimates or select committee reports chosen by the Liaison Committee.
