Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Kenneth Clarke, made a statement in the House of Commons on Wednesday 18 January on the conclusion of the detainee inquiry.

Detainee inquiry

The Detainee Inquiry was set up by the Prime Minister in July 2010, to look at whether Britain was implicated in the improper treatment of detainees, held by other countries, that may have occurred in the aftermath of 9/11.

Following further Metropolitan Police investigations announced last week into the allegations concerning renditions of two individuals to Libya and their alleged ill-treatment, the Lord Chancellor announced that the Government has decided to conclude the work of the Detainee Inquiry.

Shadow Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Sadiq Khan, responded to the statement on behalf of the Opposition.

Oral statements

Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday). Statements normally relate to matters of policy or government actions. At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
