Lord Speaker hosts student insight day
10 July 2012
The Lord Speaker gave a talk and chaired a question and answer session for students as a part of the Jack Petchey Foundation/Speakers Trust House of Lords Insight Day 2012 at the House of Lords yesterday (Monday 9 July).
The event followed a successful Speakers Trust and Jack Petchey Foundation event hosted by the Lord Speaker in October 2011, where students asked to find out more about the House of Lords.
In response, an ‘insight day’ was organised to offer students a behind the scenes experience and the chance to meet members and officials while they find out how they can get involved with the work of the Lords.
The morning session included a Parliament’s Education Service workshop on Parliament and the work and role of the House of Lords and its history.
Students attended a 45-minute session including an informative talk from the Lord Speaker and a 20-minute question and answer session.
Later in the day, students watched the Lord Speaker's procession before work started in the chamber. They met members including Baroness Young of Hornsey (Crossbench), Baroness Sherlock (Labour) and Baroness Parminter (Liberal Democrat) during 'speed dating' style meetings, where students spoke to members face to face.
