The Lord Speaker, Baroness D'Souza, spoke at a National Union of Students (NUS) conference yesterday (Wednesday 14 March).

The event 'Engaging with Parliament: Preparing to Lobby' was held at NUS headquarters and opened at 10am by Pete Mercer, the NUS Vice President. Pete Mercer is one of five Vice Presidents and is responsible for Welfare and was the Student Support Officer at Newcastle University from 2008 to 2010.

The Lord Speaker made her keynote speech and took questions from delegates. Themes in her speech included her role as Lord Speaker, why engagement with members of the House of Lords can be valuable and the impact the different types of membership of the Lords and Commons has on engagement.

Sessions followed from the Parliamentary Outreach team on understanding how Parliament works and on how to engage with it.

Around 45 to 50 elected officials from students unions across the UK attended the conference.
