Death of Earl Ferrers

Conservative hereditary peer, Earl Ferrers, has died aged 83
Earl Ferrers first came to the House of Lords in 1955.
He served as a government whip from 1962-1964, and again from 1971-1974. He went on to become Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1974, and between 1976-1979 he was Joint Deputy Leader of the Opposition. From 1979-1983 he served as Minister of State for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, he was also Deputy Leader of the Lords during this time.
In 1988 he became Minister of State for the Home Office, a position he kept until 1994. From 1994-1995 he was Minister for Small Firms and Consumer Affairs and from 1995-1997 he served as Minister for the Environment and Countryside. From 1988-1997 he again served as Deputy Leader of the House of Lords.
Earl Ferrers was elected as one of the hereditary peers remaining in the House of Lords following the House of Lords Act in 1999.
