Statement on the EU Council

The Prime Minister, David Cameron, made a statement in the House of Commons on Monday 26 November 2012 on the recent meeting of the European Council.

Leader of the Opposition, Edward Miliband, responded on behalf of the Opposition.

European Council November 2012

The Prime Minister attended the European Council in Brussels which took place 22-23 November 2012, at which EU leaders met to negotiate budgetary priorities for 2014-2020 - set out in the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

The Council ended without agreement.

House of Commons Library Research Briefing

The House of Commons Library provides research, analysis and information services for MPs and their staff.

The Library has produced a Standard Note that looks at the progress of the new cycle of MFF negotiations. The current MFF will define the budgetary priorities of the EU for the seven years 2014-2020, including the possibility of a UK veto.

Statements normally relate to matters of policy or government actions. At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
