Appointment of new Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

The House of Commons on Wednesday 12 September approved a motion to appoint Kathryn Hudson as the new Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. The incumbent commissioner John Lyon's term of office comes to an end on 31 December 2012

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards

Parliamentary Commissioners for Standards are appointed for non-renewable, five year terms. The House of Commons Commission recommended the nomination of Kathryn Hudson following a recruitment process. Kathryn Hudson is the current Deputy Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman.

Key responsibilities of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards:

  • Overseeing the maintenance and monitoring the operation of the Register of Members’ Financial Interests
  • Providing advice on a confidential basis to individual Members and to the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges about the interpretation of the Code of Conduct and Guide to the Rules relating to the Conduct of Members
  • Monitoring the operation of the Code of Conduct and Guide to the Rules and, where appropriate, proposing possible modifications of it to the Committee on Standards and Privileges
  • Preparing guidance and providing training for Members on matters of conduct, propriety and ethics
  • Receiving and investigating complaints about Members who are allegedly in breach of the Code of Conduct and Guide to the Rules, and reporting their findings to the Committee on Standards and Privileges
  • The Commissioner also presents an annual report to the House of Commons on the work of their office.
