Lord Speaker visits Nottingham

Speaking ahead of her visit, the Lord Speaker emphasised her commitment to looking beyond Westminster, to hear at first hand the issues affecting individuals, and to help members of the public understand how they can get involved in the political process. She said: 'I hope that we will have a healthy exchange of ideas and opinions and come away with a much more informed sense of the issues that are close to our hearts and how we can work together for the benefit of everyone.'

Thursday 2 May

• The Lord Speaker visited East Leake Academy in Loughborough as part of the Peers in Schools programme.
• A meeting with local businesses at the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce focused on the role and work of the House of Lords and how businesses can best engage with members of the Lords.
• A lecture about her role, and the work of the Lords as one of the busiest legislative chambers in the world. Mark Stuart of the Centre for British Politics at the University of Nottingham chaired the event.

Friday 3 May

• The Lord Speaker made an informal visit to the Nottingham Women’s Centre, a women-only space offering advice, information, training and support.
• A Nottingham City Council Youth Event at the Nottingham City Council offices. The Lord Speaker met young people from schools and youth organisations across Nottingham, including the Council’s youth panel. After giving a short speech about her work, she chaired two youth debates.
• She also met members of the University of the Third Age (U3A), again in the Nottingham City Council offices.
