The Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow MP, made a statement on Monday 15 April regarding the arrangements for the funeral of Lady Thatcher on Wednesday 17 April 2013.

Speaker Bercow said that he had received a number of representations concerning how the House and Parliament as an institution might best mark this occasion.

Following consideration of these representations, Speaker Bercow has concluded that the most appropriate means of indicating the House’s sentiments, would be for the chimes of Big Ben and the chimes of the Great Clock to be silent for the duration of the funeral proceedings.
