Lords debates education
6 December 2013
Members of the Lords, including a university chancellor, a university professor, former education secretary, a school council member and a headteacher, discussed the contribution of high quality education to economic growth, on Thursday 5 December.
Lords discussed the publication of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) league table of global education by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and ways the UK can improve its ranking in the table.
They also considered factors that could be holding the UK back, including regional variations in the quality of schools and weaknesses in vocational education, and ways to improve the education system, including building more schools, attracting high quality teachers and setting high standards through the curriculum.
