Peers consider Scottish independence

Members of the Lords, including a former secretary of state for Scotland and two former ministers of state at the Scotland Office, will today ask the government for its response to the Scottish government’s declaration that, if the people of Scotland vote for independence, Scottish independence day will be 24 March 2016

This is a topical question for short debate in the Lords. Introduced in October 2013, they take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber and last for around 60 minutes. During debates, Lords are able to put their experience to good use, checking and challenging the government.
The debate was suggested by former secretary of state for Scotland, Lord Forsyth of Drumlean (Conservative). Speakers are expected to include:
- Lord Foulkes of Cumnock (Labour), former minister of state at the Scotland Office
- Lord Kerr of Kinlochard (Crossbench), former deputy chairman of Scottish Power
- Lord Maclennan of Rogart (Liberal Democrat), former MP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross
- Lord Selkirk of Douglas (Conservative), former MSP and minister of state at the Scotland Office.
Advocate General for Scotland, deputy leader of the Lords and spokesperson for the Scotland Office, Lord Wallace of Tankerness (Liberal Democrat), will contribute on behalf of the government.
