The debate centred on whether the effectiveness of the House of Lords is threatened by the increasing number of members appointed. The problems of public perception and pressures on current resources were discussed. Several potential solutions were put forward, including placing a limit on the size of the House and making it possible to remove peers who do not attend regularly. The need to consider making provisions for retirement was also discussed.
