House of Lords back to business
3 January 2014
The House of Lords returns from recess on Tuesday 7 January as members continue scrutinising bills and investigating government activity through committee work.

Children and Families Bill
The bill seeks to reform legislation in areas including adoption and children in care, aspects of the family justice system and provision for children and young people with special educational needs. It also covers statutory rights to leave and pay for parents and adopters and the right to request flexible working. The bill continues with day three of report stage, a further chance for scrutiny, in the Lords on Tuesday 7 January.
European Union (Referendum) Bill
The bill looks to make provision for a referendum in the UK on the UK’s membership of the EU. It is set for second reading, the chance for members of the Lords to debate its main purpose and key principles, on Friday 10 January.

Lobbying Bill
The Transparency of Lobbying, Non-party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill (Lobbying Bill) enters report stage, a further chance for scrutiny, in the Lords on Monday 13 January.
Lords committee work
The House of Lords select committees also return to business next week.
On 7 January, the Economic Affairs Committee hears from chief scientific officer, Professor David MacKay and Sir David King, special representative for climate change at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, as its investigation into the economic impact on UK energy policy of shale gas and oil continues.
On 8 January, EU Sub-Committee D takes evidence from witnesses including Professor Tim Benton from the University of Leeds and Professor Charles Godfray from the University of Oxford. The committee is investigating the EU's contribution to food waste prevention.
