Lord Speaker hosts student visit
3 July 2013 (updated on 3 July 2013)
The Lord Speaker, Baroness D'Souza, welcomed students from Ashington School, Newcastle, to the House of Lords today (Wednesday 3 July).
The students have been studying the women's suffrage movement and are visiting London during the centenary of the death of Emily Wilding Davison, the suffragette who was killed by the King's horse at the Epsom Derby in 1913.
The Lord Speaker spoke to the students about the importance of the suffragette movement and the efforts, which are still ongoing today, to engage more women in parliament, both as members and as politically active citizens.
Parliament holds a collection of archive documents and artefacts relating to Emily Wilding Davison and members of staff involved with work on the women's suffrage movement were also on hand to talk to the students and show them some highlights from the collection.
On this week's agenda
- On 4 July, the Lord Speaker will give a talk about the work and role of the House of Lords to citizenship teachers attending the Teachers’ Institute workshop week organised by Parliament’s Education Service.
- On 5 July, the Lord Speaker will deliver the farewell message to representatives of the British Youth Council who have been on a mentoring day at the Houses of Parliament.
