Lords debates health and social care
12 July 2013
Members of the Lords, including a former chief executive of the NHS, a former chief nursing officer and a consulting surgeon, debated future models of health and social care funding in England, yesterday (Thursday 11 July)
The debate covered the challenges facing health and social care funding and the difficulties involved in meeting public expectations for the delivery of these services in the future. Several contributions came from members with direct experience of working within the NHS, as well as from members associated with charitable organisations within the health and social care sector.
Suggestions for overcoming future funding challenges included more effective employment of technology to improve public services and a pursuit of greater cost efficiencies within the current system. Members also considered the increasing demands on the health and social care system from an ageing population and the need to address the obesity epidemic.
