Members of the Lords, including a former director of the London School of Economics (LSE), the regional chair of the Regional Growth Fund Independent Advisory Panel and a member of the council of the Royal Economic Society, debated the role of the government in generating economic prosperity and employment on Thursday 18 July.

The debate focused on the key relationship between government and business and how this relationship could help benefit the UK economy. In particular Lords looked at the role of small and medium sized enterprises, the ways in which government can encourage innovation, and the role of the private sector in strengthening the economy.

Peers also questioned whether the government should be responsible for generating economic prosperity, or if it should focus more on creating the conditions in which prosperity and employment can develop.
